28. The Gearrannan Blackhouse Village should be added to your 2023 bucket list, at Isle of Lewis
The Gearrannan Blackhouse Village is a quaint cluster of traditional stone crofts on the Isle of Lewis; a reminder of Hebridean heritage that is almost lost. The area has been settled since ancient times, but the village at Gearrannan dates to the 17th century.
For decades, Highlanders and their livestock lived in these one-room abodes. The homes, with packed earth floors, drystone walls, and thatched roofs, provided shelter from the harsh North Atlantic weather. The space was kept warm by a fire in the middle hearth, and a partition divided the human occupants from their farm animals.
Other crofts and blackhouses on the Isle of Lewis acquired running water and electricity between 1945 and 1965. People resided in these dwellings until the 1970s, when the last elderly people of the village moved into more modern homes. It appeared that the settlement would then be lost to time, crumbling and decaying until it was nothing more than a wreck.
Today, the renovated blackhouses are available as holiday accommodation. Each building is named after the family that once lived there, and parts of the village serve as a museum that honours this bygone way of island life
