16. Gullfoss, Iceland is one of the most popular waterfalls in Iceland

It is located in the canyon of the Hvítá river in the southwest part of the country. The waterfall is about 32 meters (105 feet) tall and is a two-step waterfall. The first step is a wide 11 meter (36 feet) drop, and the second step is a more narrow 21 meter (69 feet) drop.

Despite its popularity, Gullfoss has a fascinating history. In the early 1900s, there was a proposal to use the waterfall to generate hydroelectric power. However, the plan was eventually scrapped due to the efforts of a woman named Sigríður Tómasdóttir, who fought tirelessly to protect the waterfall and ensure that it remained untouched. Thanks to her efforts, Gullfoss is now protected and preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Another interesting fact about Gullfoss is that it is a popular spot for rainbows. Because of the mist created by the waterfall, it is not uncommon to see rainbows forming in the area around the waterfall, particularly in the late afternoon when the sun is at just the right angle
